No. 69

When does the kissing start
& the touching?
the smarmy declarations of forever
will follow like autumn follows summer
I'll tell you
& you'll tell me
over & over again
until it stops
dead in the water
still, so still
someone will suggest forever
& someone will spill a dream
but no one will claim responsibility
& the leak will keep on leaking

You'll open doors
I'll press buttons
we'll pretend like children
oblivious to metaphors
& social scientists, dour to the end
will quantify our steam
they can run velocity formulas
& calculate the trueness
of our lovers' dream
& the temperature of our heat
will rise & rise
until we too are surprised
at the success of the experiment.
