Rose Cain

1863-1958. Mother of James Cain

Rose Mallahan Cain, born in New Haven, Connecticut was a striking woman with a big, beautiful soprano voice. As a child she took seven years of singing lessons. Her parents died young and Rose was essentially raised by her older brother.

She married Jim Cain in 1890 and moved with him to Annapolis, Maryland. She had five children. In addition to her singing talent she had a gift for words and language. Rose did not support her son's early singing aspirations. And while she and her son were not particularly close he nevertheless loved his mother and attributed his singing and writing talents to her.

Critics have pointed out the mother/son incest themes in Cain's novels The Butterfly and Kingdom By the Sea.
