Carolyn Cassady

Carolyn Cassady writes in her memoir, Off The Road, that she had been raised in "fear and reverence of existing codes". Her marriage to Neal Cassady, no doubt, rearranged those codes somewhat. The daughter of a professor of biochemistry, her upbringing was straight-forward middle class. A graduate of the elitist Bennington College, she met Neal Cassady while she was doing graduate work in Theater and Fine Arts at the University of Denver.

Born Carloyn Robinson, she was 24 years old when she met the man who was to become an icon of the Beat generation. Neal was almost three years younger, with a considerably different background. At the time that they first met in March of 1947, Neal was already married to LuAnne Henderson.

Carolyn, who is definitely not a minor character in the story of the Beat generation, has written an informative and personal account of her life with Neal, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and the others. For a time she and Jack were lovers, and her insights into Jack's personality make interesting reading.
