CBA Chronology
CBA Celebrates 29 Years

Founded in Los Angeles on this day in 1981, the Cosmic Baseball Association celebrates its 29th anniversary today.

Two months before CBA came alive, the National League won the 52nd All Star Game, 5-4. CBA also began two weeks before the United States announced that the national debt would top one trillion dollars. Seventeen days after CBA's founding, the Los Angeles Dodgers won the 78th World Series by defeating the New York Yankees (4-2 games)...just as the cost of a first class U.S. postage stamp increased from 18 to 20 cents. Almost a month after CBA's creation, Dodger pitcher Fernando Valenzuela became the first rookie to win a Cy Young Award.

On October 9, 680 Husain ibn 'Ali entered martyrdom. On this day in 1855 Isaac Singer patents a sewing machine motor and Joshua Stoddard patents the first calliope. The Washington Monument in Washington DC opened on this day in 1888 and Ty Cobb stole home base to win the 1909 World Series. On this day in 1915, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson became the first president to attend a World Series game.

CBA's 29th Regulated Playing Season ended without much fanfare. The Delta Dragons secured the pennant and will meet the Paradise Pisces in a championship series that begins Thanksgiving Day (November 25).

Website Operations

Revampification is coming. Over the next couple of months CBA's website will be undergoing revampification. The plan is to revamp in phases with a first phase completion date of September 30, 2010...just ahead of CBA's 29th anniversary on October 9.

Word has it that the poetry module will be subject to revampification first, but the complete order of revampification is not known. Ashley Marcuse is the revampification designer-in-chief and she wants to emphasize visitor visual interaction while maintaining the site's traditional approach to excluding painful advertising gimmicks and eyesores.

Technological Singularity
Personal Cosmic Game
The Singularity Plays Cosmic Baseball

The field of artificial intelligence spawned "the singularity" concept. Using spontaneous meta-mitosis, both a university and an institute have been born. The CBA is lucky to have teams from these organizations playing on the cosmic baseball field.

The visiting Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence (SIAI) was founded in 2000 "to develop safe artificial intelligence software, and to raise awareness of both the dangers and potential benefits it believes AI presents. The organization advocates ideas initially put forth by I. J. Good and Vernor Vinge regarding an 'intelligence explosion', or Singularity..."

The home team is Singularity University founded in 2007 with the mission "to assemble, educate and inspire a cadre of leaders who strive to understand and facilitate the development of exponentially advancing technologies in order to address humanity’s grand challenges."

Republicans @ Democrats

Politics and power go together like milk and honey. Money and power go together like politics and power. Where do they all go together? Often times, it is to someone's bedroom where everything is naked but the truth. This personal cosmic baseball game does nothing to alter the fairy tale or its putative happy ending...even if some of the happy powerful do not really live happily ever after.

Dragons @ Presidents

The Delta Dragons, behind starter and famed rock musician Jerry Garcia blanked the Washington Presidents. Richard Nixon took the loss but had a double in the fifth.

Writing late in his life, Richard Nixon forcefully pointed us back to Woodstock as a symbolic reason for continuing the war on drugs: "Even today, when most of the prestige media have managed to crowd onto the anti-drug bandwagon, they could not help indulging in a revolting orgy of nostalgia during the twentieth anniversary of Woodstock. The smarmy retrospectives glossed over the fact that Woodstock's only significant legacy was the glorification of dangerous illegal drugs.... To erase the grim legacy of Woodstock, we need a total war against drugs."

The media reported on the deaths of the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia and baseball star Mickey Mantle as exercises in moral diagnosis. Mantle was said to have died from too much "partying"; and Garcia, from assorted drugs, cigarettes, and food. Constant public service announcements, political speeches, and public health pronouncements urge us to "just say no" to drugs, cigarette smoking, fatty foods, teen sexuality, non-monogamous sex, and violent TV shows and music lyrics. Typically, the media have applauded such changes as reflecting the new mood of the times.

National Train Day Game

Documented American train thieves competed against celluloid visions of trains in this Second National Train Day Cosmic Baseball Game celebrating the 3rd Annual National Train Day in the United States. The Train Robbers defeated the Train Movies in a well-played, exciting game.

Crime, film, baseball and trains have all intersected each other during American history. This year, the organizers of the National Train Day event created a special exhibition "History of Baseball's Travel on Trains" at the 30th Street Amtrak station in Philadelphia.

Shrine of the Eternals

On July 18 2010 in Pasadena, California, three new members will be inducted into the Shrine of the Eternals, the Baseball Reliquary's equivalent of a Hall of Fame. The top vote-getter of the class of 2010 is Major League baseball player and field manager,Charles Dillon "Casey" Stengel. American sports writer Roger Angell and Major League baseball player and manager Pete Rose are the other two 2010 electees.

(Parenthetically, The keynote speaker at the Shrine of the Eternals induction ceremony will be american writer David Kipen who wrote an interesting book arguing that it is the writers of films rather than the directors that are most responsible for the film's vision. Kipen's Schreiber Theory, published in 2006 reversed years of auteur theory supremacy in the film studies world.)

Is Caribou Barbie a Prospect?

There are rumors that the Babylon Barbies want to draft Caribou Barbie. The swirl of rumors began after Alec Baldwin attending a seminar at Harvard Universitiy's John F. Kennedy School of Government suggested that former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin was popular because she fits the popluar "Barbie" image cultivated by the news media. Baldwin overtly referred to Palin as a "Caribou Barbie." The association of Palin with Barbie started when Palin emerged on the national scene in 2008 while she was John McCain's running mate. (McCain's wife has also be called a "Barbie Doll" in several internet-based reports.)

The trouble the Babylon Barbies are going to have drafting Caribou Barbie is the growing concensus that the designation is disrespectful.

Dharma Beats @ Wall Street Debentures

Beat Generation personalities on the field play with folks associated with one of Wall Street's greatest scammers. Bernard Madoff was born the year that Jack Kerouac batted .385 for the Dracut Tigers in Massachusetts. In today's game, Madoff did not get his curve or any other pitch by the free-swinging Beats. Kerouac got two hits (and scored two runs) off the man they claim schemed people out of their money, to the tune of billions of dollars.

Dharma Beats team owner Allen Ginsberg is well known to be politically opposed to the machinations of capitalism. And many members of the Beats share their owner's disdain for the materialism that capitalism spawns. This explains why the old poet danced naked on the field after rookie Beat starting pitcher Seymour Krim finished the game by getting Deborah Madoff, the Debentures leftfielder, to fly out to centerfield.

Report: Mars Seems Distracted and Distant

Astronomers will tell you that the Planet Mars is in the Cancer constellation: "Mars, dimming into the distance at magnitude +0.1, shines very high in the south in early evening and in the southwest later. It's in Cancer, drawing away from Pollux and Castor in Gemini. " (Sky & Telescope, This Week's Planet Roundup [Week of March 26 - April 3.]). Astrologers will show you on their chartds that Mars, having just completed a retrograde phase is moving forward in the early part of the constellation Leo. Cancer is west of Leo.

Washington Presidents @ Babylon Barbies

What could be more American than American Barbie Dolls playing against American Presidents on the cosmic baseball field? Unfortunately the Barbies weren't quite up to the task as they committed a phenomenal amount of errors in the field and did nothing of note at the plate.
