Baseball Reliquary
2008 Shrine of the Eternals Class

Buck O'Neil, Emmett Ashford and Bill Buckner are the newest members of the Baseball Reliquary's Shrine of the Eternals. They will join the 27 other members in the Shrine this weekend.

O'Neill , among other notable biographical facts, became Major League Baseball's first black coach when the Chicago Cubs signed him in 1962 (16 years after he won the Negro American League batting title).

Ashford was the first black to umpire in both the Minor and the Major leagues. He started in the Minors in 1951 eventually becoming Umpire in Chief of the Pacific Coast League. 2008 Shrine of the Eternals Class In 1966, he umpired in the American League and earned a reputation for his histrionics behind the plate and on the field. After umpiring, he became a special assistant to the Baseball Commissioner, Bowie Kuhn.

Buckner gained notoriety because of an error he made during the sixth game of the 1986 World Series in Fenway Park. He let a ball go under his legs. Fans eventually forgive. Bill Buckner threw out the first ball at Fenway Park's 2008 opening day ceremonies (not the ill-fated ball, American actor Charlie Sheen bought that for $93,500).

The Baseball Reliquary is a nonprofit, educational organization dedicated to fostering an appreciation of American art and culture through the context of baseball history and to exploring the national pastime's unparalleled creative possibilities.

The organization was started in 1996 by Terry Cannon who is currently its Executive Director (see Mr. Cannon's article on Doc Ellis, one of the first members of the Shrine). In 1999 the Reliquary created The Shrine of the Eternals. Election to the Shrine, which is an alternative to the more "traditional and conservative" Halls of Fame, is "the highest honor afforded" by the Reliquary.

Of the thirty members of the Shrine...nineteen played Major League Baseball...the Major League members of the Reliquary's Shrine represent all occidental zodiac signs, except Libra and Aries.

This year's induction ceremonies take place July 20 at the Pasadena Central Library in Pasadena, California.

Cosmic Baseball Playing Leagues
New Structure for Season 2009

The Cosmic Baseball playing leagues will be restructured and the new design will be in effect when Season 2009 opens (March 15, 2009).

The cosmic teams will be divided into two leagues. CBA will revive league names last used during Season 2003. Five teams will compete in the Overleague and an unspecified number of teams will be eligible to compete in the newly reformed Underleague. The four veteran Cosmic Baseball teams (Pisces, Beats, Dragons, and Presidents) and one additional team to be named later will constitute the five team Overleague.
